Check the tides before you leave!
At high tide (twice a day) the "Strood" causeway connecting Mersea Island to the mainland can be covered by the sea, blocking traffic.
If high tide is over 4.5 m, the Strood can be blocked for about 30 mins either side of high tide, up to 1.5 h either side when there are spring tides or strong winds.
